Thank you for your post, Rita. Mid September I will offer a 15 (give or take a few :-) point plan to live a quality life in the NEW workplace and in our NEW society. Some will be very controversial... but we will need to RE-THINK how we live, what we value, and the sacrifices we will "have" to make to be happy. If we do not change how we THINK, begin to take personal responsibility, place collaboration ahead of confrontation, and see that change is not only necessary - but critical to our survival (and this is not a dramatization), our future will be very painful.

Certainly my plan will NOT be the end-all; but a beginning for those who care about our future to use this as a platform for positive and sustainable change.

Jay, you have just said what too many career folks are reluctant to say. Job seekers are being told that if they just did a b c and did it right, they would get a job. So they feel less and less competent, sink into emotional valleys, blame themselves, experience family relationship breakdowns, go deeper and deeper into financial distress. I believe that there are alternatives and I believe, as you have stated, that we all need to take a look at our values. The large house, the flat screen TV, the new car cannot be the measures of self-worth. Material "prizes" are nice, but when we wrap our sense of self in those symbols we automatically lose our self respect when they are not available to us. I wish more people were talking about this so that job seekers could begin to see how to build their lives on different foundations. Thanks for showing the courage to say what needs to be said.

Hi Jay-I agree with these 8 Key Concepts, however I am left wondering about non-managers. As someone who works with job seekers and career changers it seems that similar key concepts would be vital in preparing all to be successful in their careers and jobs.

Glad to see your comment Kay; and that you could, in some way, identify with the ideas posted on my blog. I particularly like Principle #5 - as I gather you did as well.

Have a great week - Jay

Jay - Interesting article. In looking back over my career - I freqently functioned at my best during times of chaos and/or extreme stress. I was usually able to identify the HAD TO GET DONE - set priorities and time lines - and keep a cool head.

It was only after-the-fact that I would realize what had been accomplished.

Great article, and great lesson for career professionals, entrepreneurs, AND parents. Many of us seek the easy way to success, and many of us in our wish to help others actually enable them to fail by not allowing them to struggle.
