American Women – The World’s #1 Economic Power
Best-selling author and one of the nation’s leading business guru’s, Tom Peters (In Search of Excellence), says, “American women are responsible for the commercial and consumer consumption of well over 50% of the gross domestic product of the United States… which is to say that American women, by themselves, are the planet’s largest economy by far; outpacing the Japanese by a wide margin, and American males a distant third.” American women are responsible for approximately $6 TRILLION worth of consumer spending each year; own more than 9 million businesses (up from just 400,000 in 1972) and employ more than 18 million people. Today, women-owned businesses create approximately half of all new jobs in the United States.
Women Face Unique and Different Issues than Their Male Counterparts
The dynamics of the job market are changing. Over 10 million women, or 29% of the working wives in America, out-earn their husbands; 43% have a net worth of half a million dollars or more; 47% of investors are women (women fueled the mutual fund revolution); and women are forming investment clubs at a pace of 10 to 1 over men. Men won’t want to hear this but, if IQ is important or an indicator for success, women have higher IQ’s than men. Women bring home 59% of the associate degrees, 55% of bachelor degrees, 53% of master’s degrees, and 40% of the PhD’s. Indeed, more men go to college than women – but women stay and finish!
That being said, women face different issues, problems, situations and circumstances than men do. Often times it takes a woman to understand and effectively inspire other women to achieve success. Ellen’s “Abridged” Background
Ellen was a single mom and struggled to raise two daughters on her own in Northwest Ohio. As a Special Education Teacher, she was unable to fully live the quality of life she wanted for herself and her daughters; so she mustered the drive, courage and resources to go back to school – law school. Ellen worked for a nationally respected law firm and has experienced first hand the challenges women face working in what is considered ‘a male dominated profession.’ Ellen started her own law firm in partnership with 2 other women – and built one of the most successful law firms in her market. She says, “They (competing attorneys and law firms consisting primarily of men) didn’t take us seriously at first. They called us the “Hobby Firm” … but it didn’t take long before we got their attention… and we DID get their attention!”
The GOOD NEWS! Women Will Play a Significant Role In Ending this Recession
Statistics reveal that men are losing jobs at a pace not even close to women. As of January, 2009, 1.1 million fewer men were working than a year ago. 12,000 more women are working in the same time period! Overall, Americans lost 2.6 million jobs in 2008 and many women have been forced to return to the workplace to help secure their family’s financial stability. Indeed, this is a daunting task for many women but not one unfamiliar to them. As the American economy transitions to good health, women will play a significant role both in the transformation process and how the “new economy” will look when the transition is complete. More women will be working; women will be making more money – equal to or greater than their male counterparts; and women will start more businesses and employ even more people than they do today. For this to happen, women will need to have the right tools, use the right strategies and develop and master the right skills.
Tools and Strategies Have Changed Dramatically!
Many women who have NOT been in the workforce in years (or ever) may be forced back as a result of their spouse’s inability to secure employment quickly or to land jobs at the same level of pay. Divorce rates go up in recessions and, as a result, many women who have not been in the job market are returning to it. With this in mind, the entire process of securing a job has changed - from résumé development to strategies on how best to distribute the résumé. You can’t get a great job in the most competitive job market in decades with an assembly line, look-alike résumé. And if one’s primary strategy for getting a job today is sitting at the computer and applying for jobs online – it may be a long, long time before the computer bellows out “You have a job!”
